20. Firefly Graveyard (1988)
Studio Ghibli is responsible for the production of Grave of the Fireflies, a film renowned for its sad animated themes. Aside from the sad plot, the movie has one of the most devastating anime deaths ever.
The film is set in post-World War II Japan and follows two orphans who are struggling for survival. In the film, Setsuko, a four-year-old girl, learns how difficult life can be. Her older brother does his hardest to look after her, but he eventually fails.
After offering Setsuko a little piece of melon, Seita (the brother) looks for more food. The tiny slice of watermelon, unbeknownst to him, would be his sister’s final meal. Because Grave of the Fireflies is based on a real story, it is all the more sad.
I’d want to eat your pancreas (2018)
One day, “Me,” a high school student, came upon a paperback in the hospital. The “Disease Coexistence Journal” was the name of the publication. Sakura Yamauchi, a classmate of “Me,” had maintained a hidden diary. Her days were numbered due to her pancreatic ailment, it was revealed inside.
As a consequence, “Me” went from being a “Just-a-Classmate” to becoming a “Secret-Knowing-Classmate.” It was as though he was drawn to her, despite the fact that she was the polar opposite of him. The world, on the other hand, conveyed an equally dreadful reality to the girl who had already been affected.
Omoide no Marnie ( (2014)

Rihito is the archetypal bright student who does excellently on his school entrance test. Hiraku, on the other hand, is a musician who is the guitarist for a specific band. However, when the music festivals approach, the two begin to collaborate.
Lost Song, No. 16 (2014)
Lost Song tells the story of Rin, a little girl who is gifted with the talent to sing. She embarks on a journey to sing in the capital. She is, however, unaware that another girl in town, Finis, has a similar ability.
Finis is a recluse who lives in the city’s royal palace, while Rin is an energetic teenager from the countryside. Both, however, have the ability to manipulate the winds, create water, and heal wounds via singing.
The two bright girls hope that their last song would offer their loved ones hope as war looms over the land.
Perfect Blue (15.) (1998)
When it comes to critically acclaimed sad anime films, Perfect Blue is the best. The film is based on the book Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, which exposes the entertainment industry’s nefarious practices.
The main character, Mira Kirigoe, is a well-known pop singer who is a member of the renowned group CHAM! Mira eventually leaves her band to pursue an acting career. The acting world, on the other hand, does not treat her well, and she finds it difficult to let go of her pop artist image.

Jiro wants to fly and build beautiful aircraft like Caproni, the famous Italian aviation designer. Jiro joined a renowned Japanese engineering company in 1927 after being born nearsighted and unable to fly, and went on to become one of the world’s most creative and brilliant aircraft designers.
The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic, and Japan’s entrance into World War II are all shown in the film. Jiro meets Nahoko and falls in love with her, and he develops and cherishes his relationship with Honjo, a colleague.
11. The Piano Forest (2018)
The TV program follows Kai Ichinose and is named Piano no Mori: The Perfect World of Kai in Japan. He and Shuhei, the son of a professional pianist, frequently escape his mother’s red-light district to play the piano in the wilderness.

In the summer of 1996, three middle-school students make a promise to cross the border in an aircraft they constructed themselves in order to learn the tower’s secret. Even yet, their intentions are thwarted when the girl, Sayuri Sawatari, becomes sick and is flown to Tokyo.
Hiroki Fujisawa learns Sayuri has been in a coma since then, on the brink of another another war. Takuya Shirakawa is enlisted to help him discover a way to wake her awake.

Kyoto Animation Studio’s anime film ‘A Silent Voice’ is about a bored teenager called Shouya Ishida. To pass the time, he and several of his classmates viciously abuse Shouko Nishimiya, a new deaf transfer student. When the school authorities find out, he is held solely accountable for all that has occurred to her.
Soon after, the rest of the school ignores him, and he spends the remainder of his middle and high school years alone. When he realizes his mistakes, he vows to meet Shouko again and make up for whatever damage he may have caused. The story that follows is a happy one about a young boy who tries to make up for his errors in the past.
In addition to a wonderfully moving story, ‘A Silent Voice’ has some of the most stunning pictures and music. The dark and ominous topics it discusses will certainly make your pulse skip a beat. Finally, it may lead you to reconsider your own past and current interactions with others.
Violet Evergarden is number seven on the list (2018)
Another slice-of-life cartoon is Kyoto Animation’s “Violet Evergarden.” Violet, a young teenage girl caught up in the brutality of the Great War, is the protagonist of the story. All the while, she was only trained to kill opponents, and at the conclusion of the battle, she finds herself in a hospital with nothing except a few unfamiliar words from her only loved one.
After feeling lost in the postwar world, she starts working at CH Postal Services. She finds a “Auto Memory Doll” at work, which acts as an assistant, turning a person’s thoughts into words on paper. She is so enamored with the idea that she decides to work as one herself, and so her journey begins, assisting her in changing the lives of those she works for while also assisting her in realizing the true purpose of her own life.
Kyoto Animation is renowned for producing emotional slice-of-life animations. Despite this, ‘Violet Evergarden’ is a far cry from their previous work. Overall, the anime is much more than a good tearjerker, and it may even teach you something about your own real life purpose.
6. In This Part of the Globe (2016)
Suzu Urano, a young girl, moves to Hiroshima’s small hamlet of Kure and marries a clerk who works at the nearby naval base. Despite the difficulties they face as a result of the harsh wartime circumstances, they manage to maintain a decent standard of living. All of this, however, comes to an end in 1945, when the Hiroshima bombs destroy their village. She is first devastated by the bombs’ effect on the lives of those around her. Despite this, she perseveres in the face of adversity and tries to live a life of bravery and unwavering determination.
Despite the fact that ‘In This Corner of the World’ is just 2 hours and 36 minutes long, it may take you on an emotional rollercoaster in that time. From its terrifying depictions of air raids to uplifting moments that will surely make you weep, this anime is without a doubt one of the best war films available today. I am sure that if you were affected by ‘Grave of the Fireflies,’ you will be moved by this one as well.
Toradora is number five (2009)
‘Toradora,’ unlike the other shows on this list, is more of a rom-com with conventional character clichés. The female protagonist, Taiga Aisaka, is a tsundere who constantly carries a wooden Katana. On the other side, we have Ryuuji Takasu, a good-hearted male protagonist whose intimidating looks sometimes leads to his being labeled a criminal. Initially, the two join together to help one other win the attention of their respective loves. But, as time goes on, things take an unexpected turn, and what started out as a strange friendship soon turns into an unlikely partnership.
Overall, ‘Toradora’ is a typical high school comedy that will make you chuckle while also making you swoon over its beautiful characters. The anime’s sad ending, on the other hand, will leave you feeling strangely depressed. I won’t give away too many details here, so you’ll have to watch it for yourself if you want to learn more. Don’t be surprised if you feel a dark hole in your heart after seeing this romantic comedy.
4. Deleted (2016)
A-1 Pictures is a company that produces films. ‘Erased,’ also known in Japanese as ‘Boku Dake ga Inai Machi,’ is a mystery sci-fi thriller. Satoru Fujinuma, the protagonist, is unwittingly transported back in time every time he witnesses a tragic event. He is able to rescue the lives of many innocent individuals because to this odd yet powerful phenomena.
When he is falsely accused of his mother’s murder, he is transported 18 years back in time. This highlights the possibility that his mother’s death was connected to incidents from his childhood.
When he runs across one of his old classmates, Kayo Hinazuki, who was kidnapped and killed by an unknown attacker, things start to make sense. Satoru now has to race against the clock to alter the course of history in order to save the lives of two innocent individuals.
Now, I won’t say whether or not the anime has a satisfying conclusion, but what makes it a worthy addition to our list is its portrayal of a wide range of real and thought-provoking topics. Child abuse, loneliness, despair, bullying, ignoring one’s problems, and, of course, grieving over a loved one are just a few instances.
Incarnation of the A.I.C.O. (2018-)
‘A.I.C.O. Incarnation’ stands out from the rest of the list. It’s a thrilling sci-fi adventure that’s the newest addition to Netflix’s expanding anime originals lineup. It takes place in the year 2035 and revolves on an event known as the “Burst,” which has a major effect on the lives of many people. Aiko Tachibana, who now uses a wheelchair, is still mourning the loss of her family two years after the catastrophe.
When a transfer named Yuuya tells her the truth about what happened, everything she thought she knew about herself and the event changes. The two “teenagers,” who may now have the fate of mankind in their hands, go on a thrilling journey.
The primary focuses of ‘A.I.C.O. Incarnation’ are action scenes and exciting sci-fi riddles. The anime’s gloomy and dismal tone, however, comes from the characters’ backstories.
