These abilities, however, will not aid them in overcoming the frustrations brought on by the hectic life in the provincial town, nor in realizing romantic melodramas’ heroines’ dreams of love and a new beginning, despite the fact that these three women (music teacher, widow sculptures, and journalist) possess most of the other characteristics of a cultivated feminist. He gives them a devil in the form of Jack Nicholson with sex and new ideas that enable them to become more independent of the surroundings, and eventually of themselves, to accomplish what they couldn’t despite their talents.
He then wants to re-enslave them, and despite their superhuman abilities, this becomes a normal gender conflict. Kairo is a character in the anime Kairo (2001)
“I believe the clear knowledge of the real meaning of dread is the single most important reason why this film will remain with me for the rest of my life.
One moment in particular from this film sticks out to me: in a dirty, abandoned structure, a lady, probably a ghost cloaked in darkness, just walks approaches the protagonist. Yes, I understand, but how is that frightening? It’s the way she walks that bothers me the most.
The first stages are typical. It’s almost too ordinary. The feeling of familiarity seems to be a deception, a false sense of security. The lady, however, then trips. Before recovering, she falls low to the ground, exposing part of her face to the ambient light, but not enough. For me, this misstep is the scene’s pinnacle because of how well it navigates the uncanny valley, that thin line between familiarity and strangeness. When was the last time you saw a ghostly lady fall? It doesn’t feel right, which leads me back to the root of dread.
Fear doesn’t originate from jump scares or abrupt loud noises, for example. That’s simply shock and awe. Dread is the source of genuine terror. It’s sluggish, scary, strange, yet faintly familiar at the same time. True terror emerges from the uncanny valley, when things seem to be normal but aren’t quite. And it is precisely the impression evoked by the woman’s stride in that moment.
The scene in question also avoids typical horror film clichés, such as jump cuts, loud sounds, and overdramatization. The music is eerie and menacing. The remainder of the film is excellent, and it got positive reviews, but this sequence alone is worth seeing if you’re looking for a nice fright this Halloween.”
Edward Eugen of 10Beasts recommends a Halloween film.
Scooby-Doo! (2020)
“Because the film is based on the classic Scooby Doo cartoon, it is appropriate for both adults and children. Children will be able to appreciate the moderate terror without losing sleep or tossing and turning in their beds owing to nightmares. Adults, on the other hand, may relive the days when Scooby Doo was a popular program that they couldn’t get enough of when they were younger. This film is particularly recommended since it may be enjoyed by the whole family throughout the Halloween season without causing any unease.
Second, unlike other Halloween films, which are focused on macabre themes such as murder, ghosts, witches, violence, and the supernatural, Scoob! is based on Greek mythology, which may pique children’s interest in learning more about the subject. In addition, despite a dramatic finale that tries to evoke the Halloween mood, it has a joyful conclusion in which the evil guy is defeated and the world is saved.”
WigsMaster’s Thomas Brown recommends a Halloween movie.
Stupid Ernest was terrified (1991)
“Pumpkins, costumes, and huge hairy demonic trolls!” Oh, my goodness! These are the kinds of visuals that one wants to see in a good Halloween movie. All of this and more may be found in Ernest Scared Stupid. The film examines the concept of a 200-year-old troll reappearing from his tomb to convert children into wooden sculptures. This is already a brilliant cinematic idea in and of itself. Throw in some vintage Halloween décor, a forbidden oak tree, and an incredible cast, and you’ve got yourself some Halloween movie gold!
The wonderful Ertha Kitt (Old Lady Hackmore) and the hilarious Jim Varney (Ernest) provide the perfect mix of humor and horror in this picture. This is a film that I would suggest to individuals of all ages. It will undoubtedly put you in the mood for Halloween.”
Nikk Alcaraz of Practical Peculiarities recommends a Halloween film.
Slaxx Slaxx Slaxx Slaxx S (2020)
“An impending cult classic that recounts the tale of a terrific pair of pants. In the greatest possible manner, this picture teeters on the edge of absurdity and plausibility. Slaxx is ideal for any Halloween marathon, whether you’re watching it with company or on your alone. It never takes itself too seriously, and the murders are gruesomely entertaining. The movie moves at a good speed and doesn’t drag on too long. This one has slipped under many people’s notice, but it’ll be a great addition to any Halloween watch list.”
Daniel Hess of To Tony Productions recommends a Halloween film.
The Oregonian is a newspaper based in Oregon (2011)
“This is ideal for late-night Halloween watching. It’s a crazy and psychedelic horror picture that proved controversial upon debut. It’s an eerie picture that’s been mostly overlooked and underappreciated. While not overtly holiday-themed, this film is full of odd events, images, and music. It’s a weird journey through the mind that will undoubtedly leave the whole room in a wonderfully odd state when the credits roll.”
Daniel Hess of To Tony Productions recommends a Halloween film.
Unfavorable Moon (1996)
“Bad Moon, although not one of the best horror films, is without a doubt the best werewolf horror film to date! It was and still is my favorite werewolf film from childhood.
Perhaps the most significant reason for my recommendation is the werewolf special effects – you will never witness a more bizarre and frightening werewolf than the one in this film!
The storyline is also excellent, focusing on the main character Thor, a German Shephard who epitomizes the perfect family-protective dog.
The movie’s surprise is particularly fantastic since the adversary is a very close family member, Ted Harrison, the widowed sister of Janet Harrison, who lives with her small kid and dog.
Ted and his fiancée were attacked by a werewolf while on an excursion in Napel with his girlfriend. He succeeds in escaping, despite the fact that she died. Knowing he was cursed, Ted went into seclusion, but was contacted by his sister, who want to console and assist her brother in his recovery from their broken relationship, a lie Ted told his sister.
Following that, Ted is asked to live with his sister, and her dog eventually notices that something is wrong with Ted. The greatest moments will be when they witness Ted change into a powerful werewolf, which will be well created and portrayed by the visual effects.”
Julian Goldie of Goldie Agency recommends a Halloween film.
The Pontianak’s Revenge (2019)
“Set in 1965, Revenge Of The Pontianak illuminates a tale in which Malay Mina(h) tells her side of the story. Gavin Yap, a Malaysian actor and filmmaker, co-directed the film. The film is about revenge on the guy who killed Minah years ago, as the title implies. It begins when the two protagonists, Khalid and Siti, are preparing for a wedding in a tiny hamlet. Later, the whole hamlet is enveloped in darkness, which is followed by a series of terrible deaths and unexplained events, instilling dread and suspicion among the inhabitants.
Khalid is forced to confess to the death of a girl he impregnated years earlier, and he thinks her souls have returned as Pontianaks to exact vengeance. The villagers decide to join forces and go into the forest to hunt down the angry vampire. Since the premiere of his 2009 murder thriller The Blue Mansion, Singaporean filmmaker Glen Goei hasn’t been seen on the big screen. Read his takeover as a guest editor.”
Harriet Chan of Coco Finder recommends a Halloween movie.
Burnt Sacrifices (1976)
“This somewhat more adult-oriented picture has an all-star ensemble from the 1970s. A metropolitan family searching for a summer rental is “fortunate” enough to come upon a mansion that is reasonably priced. The family, especially the mother, starts to be affected by the home.
The magnificent Dunsmuir House served as the backdrop for this film. It has a fantastic rating!”
Fast Food Menu Prices’ Harland Adkins recommends a Halloween film.
Abby is a young woman who lives in the (1974)
“This film will frighten you! It’s an African American spin on The Exorcist!
William Marshall, well known for his role in Blacula, starred in Abby.
Marshall appeared in two films as the role and will make you jump!”
Fast Food Menu Prices’ Harland Adkins recommends a Halloween film.
Garden of Torture (1967)
“Though not a Hammer picture, this British thriller stars Peter Cushing, Michael Ripper, and Barbara Ewing, all of whom had previously appeared in Hammer films. Burgess Meredith and Jack Palance appear in the film. As carnival-goers watch a sideshow put on by a mystery yet oddly charming presenter, there are some unsettling moments.”
Fast Food Menu Prices’ Harland Adkins recommends a Halloween film.
Old Lace and Arsenic (1944)
“My favorite Halloween film is Cary Grant’s Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).” This 1941 dark comedy, directed by Frank Capra, was based on a play by Joseph Kesselring. This black-and-white film is set on Halloween and is full of slapstick and intellectual chuckles.
You’ll need a semi-sick sense of humor for this one, since it’s about Cary Grant’s two tiny old aunts who poison their bachelor visitors out of compassion to put them out of their lonely suffering. Then there’s the funny sibling who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt and uses San Juan Hill, aka the stairs, to go upstairs every time. Grant’s other fugitive brother comes up with his minion in the middle of the night, and numerous jokes are made about his similarity to Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s monster. Grant is simply wanting to go away on his honeymoon until he learns his aunts’ secret and also has to cope with his criminal brother throughout all of this.
I like how the set and cinematography are kept simple so that the emphasis is on the narrative and people. It’s simple to understand how this started out as a stage play and then seamlessly transitioned to cinema.
This is a fantastic family Halloween film since it isn’t frightening and doesn’t include the usual ghosts and monsters.”
Tabitha Bailar of Travel Compositions recommends a Halloween film.
ferocious (1999)
“Guy Pearce appears in a chilling horror film set during the Mexican-American War in which a wounded soldier is brought back to life by practicing cannibalism after hearing an ancient tale. The film incorporates dark humour and humor, as well as great dialogue and shocks. Given Guy’s subsequent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other projects, this lesser-known horror picture is one you may have missed!”

The Appointment (2015)
“Check out The Visit if you’re searching for a good scary movie to get you in the mood for Halloween.
It has all of the classic horror clichés, but it does it in such a unique, unsettling manner that it terrifies you in a way that few contemporary horror films do. Sleepwalking as you’ve never seen it before, scary old folks, kids in peril, and sleepwalking like you’ve never seen it before.
In a nutshell, two small children board a train to pay a visit to their grandparents. They’ve heard wonderful things about them, despite the fact that they’ve never met them. Strange things begin to happen from the minute they arrive. As the chaos unfolds, the youngsters begin to realize that their lovely, elderly caregivers aren’t who they seem to be…
This is a roller coaster, so make sure you’re strapped in before you start!”
Jessica Woods from Chickens and You recommends a Halloween film.
The Hound of the Baskervilles is a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1939)
“Halloween is the ideal opportunity to familiarize yourself with Sherlock Holmes, everyone’s favorite investigator. If your Sherlock knowledge is confined to the British TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a great place to start (1939). In this renowned version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary classic, starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, and Wendy Barrie, old Hollywood elegance abounds.
Its eerie music and vintage clothing perfectly encapsulate the Victorian era. SirCharles Baskerville was discovered dead at his rural home with no visible indications of suffering, yet his face is contorted in terror. Dr. Mortimer, one of his friends, finds tracks that seem to belong to a gigantic animal near the corpse. Dr. Mortimer recounts the tale of the Hound of the Baskervilles, a demonic hound that is said to have murdered every Baskerville heir residing in Devonshire, during a visit to Holmes and Watson. Holmes sends Watson to Baskerville Hall to investigate and hides nearby to conduct his own investigation.
Is Sir Henry Baskerville destined to succumb to the family curse, or will Holmes solve the case? You’ll have to keep an eye on it to find out! An escaped murderous maniac, a séance, and a lot of bone-chilling screaming round out the film’s Halloween themes. This is the film for you if you’re searching for a scary but not terrifying film to watch this October!”
Mary Fagan of The Library Kitchen blog recommends a Halloween movie.
Thelma & Louise (2017)
“Perhaps one of my all-time favorite films, Thelma chronicles a witch’s hero’s journey from start to finish. A bashful young lady enrolls in university and discovers freedom from her religious parents. Her magical abilities continue to manifest as she battles with her health, the natural environment, and sexual experiences with a female classmate.
Several moments in this video stole my breath away (all I’ll say is that they feature birds), and I sat there astonished by its beauty and the unfolding secrets of love and ancestors after seeing it for the first time. Almost everyone I know should see this film.”
Rebecca M. Farrar, M.A. recommends Wild Witch of the West as a Halloween movie.
The Resonance (2008)
“THE ECHO from 2008 is one of my Halloween favorites for sheer spookiness. This is a remake of director/horror-auteur Yam Laranas’ original 2004 Filipino film SIGAW (which is definitely worth seeing!). Because I was also the cinematographer on the 2008 production — which stars Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, and Kevin Durand — it’s a shameless nomination, but we poured all of our love for slow-burn old-school John Carpenter flicks like HALLOWEEN and THE FOG into every frame, and I believe true horror fans will feel the love:
Jesse Bradford portrays a young guy who has recently been released from jail and has moved into his deceased mother’s creepy old New York City apartment. He witnesses the frightening sights and noises of the decaying building the longer he stays, including severe domestic disputes from the flat next door. THE ECHO was produced by Roy Lee and Doug Davison, who have a lengthy history of producing horror films such as THE GRUDGE and THE RING, and it slipped under the radar in 2008 due to its late arrival in the trend of American remakes of Asian horror films. Despite this, it has a tangible atmosphere and nerve-wracking sound design that will linger long after you’ve turned off the TV and gone to bed. On a cold October evening, by the fading light of your jack-o-lantern, it’s a nice old-fashioned ghost tale that will give you the creeps.”

A Ball for Witches (2017)
“I’d like to share a Halloween movie that my kids found last year with you. We embarked on a Halloween movie spree during the epidemic, viewing one every day. I was overjoyed when I discovered The Witches Ball (2017) on Netflix.
It’s a sweet coming-of-age story about a little girl who lives in a world full of witches and non-witches. It contains a few important life lessons that are appropriate for young children (like how to do the right thing, how to forgive, and the value of connecting with family).
I like how it portrays witches in a good way and captures the spirit of Halloween without being too frightening for children. But, most importantly, it is filled with enough comedy for both children and adults to hold everyone’s attention. My kids often request that the dumbest moments be replayed.”
I’m With Holly’s Holly Nordenberg recommends a Halloween movie.
9th Session (2001)
“Session 9 is a strange, exciting, and underappreciated treat. If you like films that make you feel a growing feeling of dread, this is the film for you.
You’re left not knowing what’s genuine and what’s not thanks to the intimidating backdrop of an abandoned mental hospital coupled with a gradual unraveling of secrets. Don’t be fooled by the film’s gradual burn; you’ll be left with a lasting feeling of dread when it’s over.”
Benjamin Smith from Disco recommends a Halloween movie.
The Blob is a blob-like creature that (1958)
“The Blob!” exclaims the speaker. 1958 This classic 1950s picture marked Steve McQueen’s directorial debut, and it has a charming, catchy theme tune composed by Burt Bacharach, who was also a rising star at the time. It’s a fun, family-friendly monster film that stands up well despite the lack of expensive special effects. In the movie, there’s a fantastic scene when people are viewing a frightening movie and fleeing from a movie theater! It has a strong resemblance to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
